Recognizing that high impact research results may not be available by the general abstract submission deadline, SIOP offers an option to submit late-breaking. This category is not intended as a deadline extension; it is reserved for highly relevant, impactful research whereby the data became available in the last three months. The late-breaking program is not designed to favor investigators who inadvertently missed the submission deadline, and selection adheres to strict criteria as outlined below.

Late-breaking Work (LBW) submissions include innovative research ideas, preliminary results, industry showcases, and system prototypes addressing eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) theory and practice. LBW submissions offer a valuable opportunity to share early-stage work, elicit helpful feedback, and foster discussions at the conference.

LBW papers are semi-archival, meaning that authors retain the right to reuse and resubmit the content in other peer-reviewed venues and for future CHI full paper submissions. This makes LBW submissions an ideal way for newcomers to the field to gain recognition and participation at the conference.

Accepted LBW submissions will be presented as a poster at the conference in a dedicated session. If accepted, the presenter will be assigned a time to deliver a short 1-2 minute presentation to conference attendees. All accepted LBW and demo presentations will be included in the CHI 2025 e-poster and LBW proceedings. LBW and demo submissions also have the option to include an appendix up to 10 pages. Appendixes should be used to provide additional detail, such as detailed methodology, data analysis, or supporting references that cannot fit in the main submission.
