World news (also known as international or foreign news) is a field of journalism that deals with the reporting of events that affect or involve countries or other global topics. It can be contrasted with domestic news, a term that describes events that impact or influence the daily lives of citizens in their own country and its institutions. There are a number of subfields within world news, including war journalism and coverage of international organizations such as the United Nations. Journalists who specialize in world news typically have a strong understanding of international politics and history, but may not be able to travel internationally for research purposes.
In the United States, the network ABC airs a show called World News Now (or WNN) during the overnight hours from Monday through Friday. It features a mixture of general news and offbeat stories, along with weather forecasts and repurposed segments and story packages from other ABC News programs. It is also known for its irreverent and lighthearted tone, with many segments that are designed to be funny or quirky.
WORLD News Group started in 1981 as a children’s publication under Joel Belz, with the vision of equipping journalists to report the news through a Christian worldview. Today, WORLD has expanded to multiple platforms and provides sound journalism, grounded in Biblical truth. The mission is to bring Christ’s love to the world through news that is discerning, unbiased, and fair. As part of that mission, the organization has created a journalism training program for young Christians called the WORLD Journalism Institute (WJI).
